ESL Rhetoric and Composition

The Composition Program at NIU offers several courses designed for students whose native language is not English.

Testing and placement in these special sections of composition are coordinated by the director of the ESL Center.

ESL courses include special sections of ENGL 103 and ENGL 104, as well as:

  • ENGL 451. ESL RHETORIC AND COMPOSITION I (3). Only for graduate students whose native language is not English. Exploration of academic discourse in a cross-disciplinary context. Writing and revising essays with special support for grammar and mechanics. Reading of academic prose. Weekly writing assignments. PRQ: Placement by testing.
  • ENGL 452. ESL RHETORIC AND COMPOSITION II (3). Only for graduate students whose native language is not English. Exploration of critical strategies and documented writing in the disciplines. Documented writing required in all sections. Special support for grammar and mechanics. PRQ: ENGL 451.
  • ENGL 453. ESL RHETORIC AND COMPOSITION (3). Only for graduate students whose native language is not English. A concentrated approach to disciplinary writing with special support for grammar and mechanics. Reading of academic prose. Documented writing required in all sections. PRQ: Placement by testing.
