Technology, for better or worse, is changing the way we live and the way we communicate. It is creating new "worlds" and new identities, and with this technology come new rules and guidelines. Whether we like it or not, technology, computers, and the internet are part of modern American culture. And if we are going to be a part of this new global village, we need to know what we're getting into.
When people travel to foreign countries, they are expected by the natives of that land to know and follow the customs. Perhaps you've heard of the saying, "When in Rome, do as the Romans." Well, in cyberspace, the same holds true. Surfing the web and participating in chat rooms or discussion groups are just like traveling through a new country. We must strive to understand the language, customs, and traditions of this new environment.
This week, we'll be talking about "Netiquette." Don't worry if you've never heard of this term before; it will be explained shortly.
Before we get into our discussion
of "Netiquette," go to the following link, and take the quiz there.
It isn't graded, so don't worry
about getting things wrong or not knowing exactly what the quiz is asking.
Do your best, and be sure to read the explanations of the answers that
the quiz provides (each time you answer, it will tell you what the right
one was and why it was the right answer).
After you're done with that, return here.
