A Hypothetical Works Cited Page
Now that we have, hypothetically speaking, collected all of our sources,
cited them in our text, and are ready (almost) to finished our first draft
of our "paper," we need to make a works cited page. To make this page,
we must keep the following in mind:
-
All works cited in the body of the paper MUST appear. (If it wasn't quoted,
it doesn't get put on the works cited page, and if it was quoted, it has
to be there.)
-
The works cited page DOES NOT COUNT as part of your paper length.
(If your teacher asks for 5-7 pages, you need to have 5-7 pages of text.
Title pages, works cited pages, etc. don't calculate into the total. Sorry.)
-
Works cited pages MUST conform to the format--in our case MLA--that your
paper is written in.
So what are the MLA guidelines for this page?
Well, here's a brief hit list:
-
It must be titled Works Cited
-
The entries should be in alphabetical order according to the authors' last
names (DO NOT number them)
-
Everything needs to be double spaced
-
The first line of every entry should be flush to the 1" margin. Every line
following that for the same citation needs to be indented 5 spaces
-
All entries should appear on the same page(s). DO NOT separate entries
according to type
There are more specific guidelines regarding headers and whatnot,
and these rules change. So . . . in case you forgot . . . be sure to refer
to your manual for the most current standards.
Here's an example of the works cited for our hypothetical paper:
