English 315 is an introduction to Shakespeare. Students will read nine plays chosen from Shakespeare's comedies, histories, tragedies, and romances with the goal of understanding the biographical, historical, social, cultural, and aesthetic contexts of the works, as well as their relationship to the students' own lives.

 

Course Requirements:

1) Regular attendance and class participation; 2) Three 5-7 page out-of-class essays, determined in consultations with the professor, over such topics as a study of an individual play; a comparison between or among plays, etc. 3) Occasional in-class response paper  4) Additional extra credit work as agreed upon.  The three papers (and any extra credit) are worth 50 percent of the final grade.  Attendance, response papers, and class participation are worth 50 percent of the final grade.
