Title: AMERICAN LITERATURE: 1920-1960

Course Description: Includes such writers as Stevens, Eliot, Fitzgerald, Faulkner, Hurston, and Williams.

Detailed Course Description:

This class will examine some of the most representative works from 1920 to 1960, with emphasis on the modernist period.

 

Course Requirements:

Two analytical essays (5-7 pages) typed using the MLA style (30% each); Ten quizzes (40% of grade).

Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby (1925); Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun (1959); Ernest Hemingway's "Hills like White Elephants" (1925); Paul Lauter’s Heath Anthology of American Literature, Volume D, 6th ed.; Flannery O'Connor's "A Good Man Is Hard to Find" (1955); J. D. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye (1945); John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath (1939); Tennessee Williams’ The Glass Menagerie (1945).
