Title: SHAKESPEARE

Course Description: Representative comedies, tragedies, and historical plays. Special attention given to Shakespeare's growth as a literary artist andto the factors which contributed to that development; his work evaluated in terms of its significance for modern times.

Detailed Course Description:We will read Shakespeare’s sonnets and plays to understand them in their own historical context, to understand the perennial critical problems that surround them, and to speculate on their relevance for modern society.
Course Requirements:There will be quizzes on each reading assignment; two short papers and one research paper. There will also be a mid-term and a final.
Required Texts:The Complete Works of Shakespeare, Ed. by Bevington (5th edition) or the Riverside Shakespeare (or any text with a good historical introduction and line numbers.
