Detailed Course Description:English 480H is designed to prepare the prospective teacher of middle and high school students for the contemporary English language arts classroom; it reflects not only past practice but also current theory and research related to English pedagogy. Students will be given numerous opportunities to demonstrate their ability to translate theory into practice and to plan instruction based on their understanding of the Illinois Professional Teaching Standards, Illinois Learning Goals for English Language Arts and the NIU Conceptual Framework. The primary goal of this course is two-fold: to assist candidates in beginning the transformation from student to professional English teacher and to develop the knowledge base that will serve as the foundation for successful application of pedagogical skills. To meet these goals, activities and assignments in ENGL 480H have been created to address six major topics, all of which are relevant in both middle and high school settings: a) the creation of a student-centered classroom using whole class, collaborative, and individual instruction; b) the integration of multi-cultural materials into the curriculum; c) the importance of selecting materials and designing instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners; d) the role of adolescent literature; e) the development of critical thinking skills through writing, reading, listening and speaking; f) the assessment/evaluation of student work as an integral part of instruction and learning.
Course Requirements:Extensive preparation and daily, active, in-class participation are necessary to create a lively forum for the sharing of ideas. Regular attendance is mandatory. Students will respond to assigned readings, create and present lessons to the class, collaborate with other students, evaluate teaching materials found on the internet, create a unit plan appropriate for their expected student teaching placement, and make satisfactory progress with the Certification Portfolio.
Required Texts:Jim Burke-The English Teacher’s Companion, 3rd edition; Peter Smagorinsky-Teaching English by Design; other texts including young adult materials to be determined.
