Title: SHAKESPEARE

Course Description: Representative comedies, tragedies, and historical plays. Special attention given to Shakespeare's growth as a literary artist andto the factors which contributed to that development; his work evaluated in terms of its significance for modern times.

Detailed Course Description:

Through lecture, discussion, student papers, the course aims to introduce selected works of England’s greatest writer, William Shakespeare, to demonstrate what a towering genius he is and to show that his work is highly enjoyable [indeed FUN]. The primary focus will be the close reading of select plays and some of the sonnets, and an assessment of reactions to Shakespeare.

 

Course Requirements:

1. compulsory attendance for the full duration of the class time and the complete course; 2. a comprehensive mid-term and final (open book) examination; 3. approximately seven quizzes or short papers (in class and take home) including viewing videos of the plays and writing on them. Some of these involve group work (NO extensions); 4. following the class schedule. This means READING carefully the complete text being studied; 5. constructive in-class participation; 6. successful completion of several brief assignments [NO extensions]; 7. NB: All work must be the students own and sources acknowledged. Any suspicion of PLAGIARISM (Internet included) will immediately receive a failing grade. No extensions or late papers allowed.  8. No cell phones or other electronic devices.
