Title: THE ENGLISH RENAISSANCE: 1500-1603

Course Description: The development of Renaissance culture in England as reflected in the works of such writers as More, Sidney, Spenser, Hooker, and selected dramatists.

Detailed Course Description:

This course studies literature from the Tudor Period (1485-1609) excluding Shakespeare’s plays and includes authors like Thomas More, Christopher Marlow, Philip Sidney, Edmund Spenser, and William Shakespeare.  This course will approach 16th-century literature as fantasy literature, that is, that during this period writers created imaginary worlds, imaginary people, and imaginary relationships which still exist as models that people have tried to make real.

 

Course Requirements:

There will be a brief quiz on reading assignments, a research paper, and a final exam.
