Title: RESTORATION AND 18th CENTURY ENGLISH LITERATURE

Course Description: Later 17th and 18th century literature, including selections from such representative writers as Dryden, Swift, Pope, and Johnson.

Detailed Course Description:

Reading and discussion of works by representative poets, playwrights, and novelists of the period.  The class will proceed chronologically, examining various works in their social, biographical, literary, and political contexts.

 

Course Requirements:

Grades will be based on a distribution of up to 500 points as follows: Quizzes (10 points for each of 14); Paper 1 (100 points); Paper 2 (120 points); Paper 1 Discussion (25 points); Paper 2 Discussion (25 points); Attendance (3 points for each of 30 classes); Total points will be converted to grades as follows: 450-500—A; 400-449—B; 350-399—C; 300-349—D; 0-299—F.

Jonathan Swift, Gulliver's Travels;  Samuel Johnson, Rasselas;  Other texts will be available online, through Blackboard.
