| Detailed Course Description: This is the basic introductory phonology class and, as such, has no prerequisites other than a working knowledge of at least one system of phonetic transcription (IPA or other). We begin with some basic assumptions about phonology and the nature of phonological systems, proceed to descriptions of individual sounds and classes of sounds, and then to an examination of how sounds pattern and change in the course of language use synchronically and diachronically. |
