Title: THEORIES AND METHODS OF TEACHING ENGLISH TO SPEAKERS OF OTHER LANGUAGES

Course Description: A survey of theoretical principles, interdisciplinary approaches, methodology, and practical applications essential for teaching English as a second/foreign language or as a second dialect. Emphasis on linguistic, psychological, and social backgrounds of language learning in a bilingual or multilingual setting.

Detailed Course Description:

English 622 provides a comprehensive foundation in ESL/EFL teaching methods. 

You will

 

1)      become acquainted with the history and theoretical bases of current ELT methods

2)      understand current theory, research, and practice in teaching specific language skills

3)      explore issues in English language teaching for local and international contexts

4)      develop and implement pedagogical materials in a practicum.

 

In addition to lecture and discussion format, the final two weeks of class will be dedicated to practicum reports.

Course Requirements:

The minimal requirements for passing this course will be successful completion of written assignments, in-class presentation of your ESL practicum experience, a written practicum report, a final take-home exam.  Additional in-class or homework assignments will be assigned as required.
