Title: WOMEN WRITERS: THE TRADITION IN ENGLISH

Course Description: The literary accomplishments of women writing in English, covering a range of genres such as fiction, poetry, essays, and drama. The effects of gender on the reading and writing of literature.

Detailed Course Description:

This course will cover major texts by American women from a variety of racial and ethnic backgrounds. Readings will include poetry, fiction, drama, autobiographies, and essays by such authors as Toni Morrison, Pat Mora, Leslie Marmon Silko, and Adrienne Rich.  The class will focus on common themes and techniques in an attempt to define a tradition in American women’s writing. Topics discussed include women together (friends, mothers, daughters, sisters, lovers); women and men; the intersections of race, ethnicity, class, and gender; the politics of women’s writing; the relationships between women’s history and literature.
