| Detailed Course Description: Course Title: Ethics and Society in Shakespeare’s Comedies and Tragedies This version of ENGL 407 focuses on ethical complexities build into the humor and the suffering represented within selected comedies and tragedies from Shakespeare’s dramatic works. Analysis of these plays will include frequent attention to relevant issues of politics, law, and religion in Shakespeare’s society—as well as comparison and contrast with analogous issues in our own society.

| Course Requirements: Learning will be assessed by participation [including attendance and in-class discussion], two short critical essays, a research essay, and two exams.
