Title: TOPICS IN FILM AND LITERATURE (3)Course Description: Topics in film theory, history, and criticism, such as authorship, narrativity, adaptation, and popular genres, that have interdisciplinary value for English studies. May be repeated to a maximum of 6 semester hours when topic varies.PRQ: | ||||||
| Detailed Course Description: This course introduces students to a gender and sexuality-focused approach to analyzing film adaptation. We will cover approaches related, though not limited, to psychoanalysis, feminism, queer studies, and post structuralism. Throughout the term, we will also examine a variety of authors (including Mary Shelley, Graham Greene, Tennessee Williams, and Christopher Bram) and filmmakers (such as James Whale, Agnes Varda, Julie Dash, and Bill Condon) who both embody and examine the issues central to many debates covered in our critical and theoretical readings. | ||||||
| Course Requirements: For the seminar paper of 20-25 pages, students will have the freedom to employ the approaches covered to their own research interests or dissertation/thesis ideas, including focusing on film and literature not addressed during the term. There will also be a midterm research assignment, where students create and present an annotated bibliography on a focused gender or sexuality-related subtopic. This project can be used as a precursor to the seminar paper. | ||||||
