Title: SEMINAR: TOPICS IN LITERATURE

Course Description: Seminar devoted to advanced study of special topics and periods of literature. May be repeated to a maximum of 9 semester hours when topic varies.

Detailed Course Description:This section of ENGL 707 will focus upon the skills and strategies required in various genres of scholarly writing about literature. We will read and discuss some inspiring examples of critical scholarship and consider a few essays about the nature of literary criticism, but most of class time will be devoted to intensive in-class workshops on our own writing.
Course Requirements:

Over the course of the semester, each member of the class will submit the following:

--  A review of a recent scholarly book about literature.

--  A scholarly edition of a short literary text.

--  A conference paper on a literary topic to be presented in class

--  An article-length paper on a literary topic.

 

Each of these assignments will go through several drafts and at least one in-class workshop. Every member of the seminar will provide incisive feedback in response to other people’s work and will receive valuable feedback on their own writing.

 

Anyone enrolling in this course should be prepared to submit complete and well-developed drafts of assignments on a regular basis and in accordance with strict deadlines.
