Description: This
course will study satires written in England from 1660 to 1744. The
course will focus on three authors: John Dryden, Alexander Pope, and
Jonathan Swift. The course will also consider the theoretical and
social issues involved in satire, particularly with regard to irony
and its relation to Enlightenment philosophy and epistemology.
Supplementary readings will be drawn from Lord Shaftesbury, John
Toland, John Locke, and others.
