Title: THEORIES AND METHODS OF TEACHING ENGLISH TO SPEAKERS OF OTHER LANGUAGES

Course Description: A survey of theoretical principles, interdisciplinary approaches, methodology, and practical applications essential for teaching English as a second/foreign language or as a second dialect. Emphasis on linguistic, psychological, and social backgrounds of language learning in a bilingual or multilingual setting.

Course Description: English 622 is intended to provide a foundation in ESL/EFL teaching. The main course objectives are

  • to acquaint you with the history and theory of teaching English in various contexts

  • to develop strategies for evaluating methods, techniques, and learner needs

  • to understand the roles of context, affect, and identity—both learner’s and teacher’s—in teaching specific language skills

  • to develop, implement, and reflect on pedagogy via observation and practice


Note: 622 may be counted as an applied language course toward the doctoral requirement for “at least two courses required for the Ph.D. with a pedagogical or applied component from two of the fields of language, literature, and rhetoric” (Graduate Student Handbook 19).

Course Requirements:

Requirements: The minimal requirements for passing this course will be successful completion of a number of take-home written assignments, a teaching presentation, a written ESL classroom observation report, a practicum, and a practicum presentation. Additional graded assignments may be included.
