Course Description: Survey of theoretic, quantitative, and qualitative methods used by academic scholars and workplace professionals to conduct written technical communication research. Analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of different methodologies and their appropriateness for particular research goals and inquiries.

Course Description: English 625 explores the ways scholars and practitioners do research about professional writing. The course surveys various research methods such as interviewing, surveys, case studies, ethnography, and usability testing. It has two main goals: first, to enable graduate students to better understand and critique published research, and, second, to facilitate the design, implementation, and reporting of their own research projects.

Requirements: Coursework includes research exercises, in-class presentations, a research proposal, data collection, and reports of findings.
