| Detailed Course Description: Course
Description: This
course is intended to parallel the kind of instruction and support
offered in English 600, only it will focus on teaching literature.
Students will have opportunities to explore and develop for
themselves successful techniques for structuring curriculum, leading
discussions, bringing media into the classroom, creating assignments,
and assessing student writing related to literature. We will work
with multiple genres from various time periods; in addition, we will
focus on strategies for dealing with common challenges in teaching
literature (for example, students who won’t read texts).
Students who hope to teach our
General Education literature courses, as well as those who plan to
continue as instructors or professors of literature, are strongly
encouraged to enroll in this class.
Note:
700 may be counted as
an applied literature
course toward the doctoral requirement for “at least two
courses required for the Ph.D. with a pedagogical or applied
component from two of the fields of language, literature, and
rhetoric” (Graduate
Student Handbook 19).
