History The ESL Center came into being in 1983 under the guidance of Dr. Lev Sopudek and Dr. Jenefer Giannasi. The Purpose of the Center was to provide support services for non-native speakers of English. In the intervening years, the population of both foreign and immigrant students at NIU has increased dramatically, and the need for Center services has increased in proportion. Now, in the 1999-2000 academic year, the center has five tutors on staff, and we hope to add more in the coming years. While we use materials like taped programs, we rely chiefly on the experience and dedication of our tutors. Since 1983 the ESL Center has served hundreds of members of the NIU community. |
