Job Placement

Academic Job Placement Assistance for Graduate Students

Our department advises M.A. and Ph.D. candidates seeking positions in higher education. Our aim is to make substantial experience and good advice available to job candidates at every step in the process of finding employment.

Professionalization Activities

We offer professionalization activities designed to assist students move steadily toward a career at the end of their degree program.

  • Professionalization Workshops. Each year students at all stages in their program can attend workshops on selected topics related to professionalization, such as writing conference proposals, delivering conference presentations, building a dossier, preparing for the academic job market, and more.
  • Individualized job placement advising. The year that job candidates enter the academic job market, they will receive individualized advising that includes review of dossier materials, interview practice, and career counseling.

Job Placement Advising

M.A. and Ph.D. candidates nearing the end of their studies are encouraged to consult with the department’s Placement Advisor. Individualized job placement advising typically occurs over the course of the final year of study, beginning during the summer before entering the academic job market.
