Program Information Media and Culture in Ireland 2001

Overview
This is the tenth offering in an ongoing institutional relationship between the Northern Illinois University Departments of Communications and English and Dublin City University (DCU). It is also the fourth year of cooperation between NIU and University of North Texas (UNT). The program is in response to a growing interest among Americans in the Irish media scene which has produced such popular films as My Left Foot, The Field, Michael Collins, The Crying Game, and In the Name of the Father, along with general interest in Irish culture as evidenced through Irish Studies Programs which are currently offered by many American colleges and universities.
Lectures/question-answer sessions will be provided by eminent Irish scholars, including Professor Luke Gibbons, co-author of Cinema and Ireland and author of Transformations in Irish Culture. In addition, there will be prominent Irish film and television directors as guest lecturers who will present their media productions. Major Irish authors may also present readings from their work. Students in previous years have visited such local cultural and historical sites as the Abbey Theater, Glendalough Monastic site, Kilmainham Gaol, Trinity University's "Long Room," and attended the Galway Film Festival.
