Keynote Speaker: Cary Nelson

Dr. Nelson is Jubilee Professor of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana.  His scholarly focus is comprehensive and multifaceted--he has published over 100 articles and written or edited ten books on Modern American Poetry and Academic Freedom, including The Anthology of Modern American Poetry, and most recently, No University is an Island: Saving Academic Freedom.  As the current President of the AAUP, Dr. Nelson knows firsthand about the challenges facing academics and the profession of teaching in the liberal arts.  Dr. Nelson’s talk, entitled, “Something Wicked this Way Comes:  The Future of the Public University” will address these challenges.

Dr. Cary Nelson will headline a professionalization panel comprised of NIU English professors Dr. Mark Van Wienen (Modern American Poetry, NIU English Department’s placement advisor), and Dr. Melissa Adams-Campbell, (Early American Literature) who will speak about issues related to making the transition from degree to career and discuss ways that all academics can adjust to the ever-changing demands of academic publishing and teaching.

At 4:30 on Saturday, MCLLM 2012 will conclude with a poetry reading, featuring the work of The Dekalb poets, a local professional group of published poets, along with selected graduate student poets.  The Dekalb poets are made up of John Bradley, Susan Porterfield, Joe Gastiger, Becky Parfitt, and Rick Amesquita.
