English 300C, Spring 2002 -- Required Conference Guidelines

NOTE: Give yourself plenty of time to prepare for this appointment.  It will require some writing and thinking, and some gathering of materials.
    1. Be sure to sign up for a portfolio conference in class on April 9. Write this date and time down in your planner or another safe place where you will not miss it.  You will earn two class absences if you miss this conference without contacting me beforehand.
    1. Turn in your first draft of Essay Three to me on April 18th. I will have this draft with my comments ready for you at your appointment.
    1. Before your conference, review the class portfolio guidelines. Then go through the essays you have so far and try to decide which ones you think have the most potential. Review what you wrote and my comments, and write down at least two or three questions (about global or local revision, support, sources, or other ways to improve) for the essays you think you might include in your portfolio.
    1. Then take a look at the final assessment instructions (on our class class portfolio guidelines) and do a rough draft. As you complete this draft, jot down the questions that come up.
    1. Go through the guidelines I handed out in class for the Teacher Certification Portfolio (AKA Program Portfolio). If possible, begin collecting pieces and jotting down ideas for what you might include in the portfolio. Think of and jot down questions about what you should put in the portfolio and how you should organize it. If you have not yet bought the binder for this portfolio, along with tabbed dividers, now is the time to do so.
    1. Bring all the work you have questions about (including drafts that have my comments on them) to your conference with me. Be prepared to discuss your writing and work with me on plans to revise for the class portfolio and plans to put together the first part of the program portfolio.
    1. If you have a conflict or need to reschedule, you need to contact me as soon as you know about the problem. E-mail me at mday@niu.edu or call me at 753-6605. Please leave a message if I am not in the office.
