MOO Quick Start
for English 398/529
A. We'll start with DaMOO at about 6:15. We'll meet with Kathleen Ely's class, introducing ourselves first, then moving to small groups to discuss ideas for final webbed projects.
1. Start Pueblo by following my instructions.
2. From the PERSONAL WORLDS LIST, choose DaMOO (at Cal. State U, Northridge).
3. If you don’t see DAMOO, choose QUICK CONNECT, then in the HOST box, type damoo.csun.edu and in the PORT box, type 7777. Then click on CONNECT.
4. Resize the window so that it is large enough that you can see everything. In the lower box, type CO GUEST and hit the ENTER key. Choose Log to a File from the FILE menu, and designate a place on the F drive, hard drive (C or D) or your floppy (A, but you will need to put one in) in which to store the log. Don't forget to retrieve it later!
5. Type @NAME <your_name> so that you can be identified. No capital letters or brackets are needed. Don't be afraid to try out a pseudonym, if you like!
6. Type @go #6086 to go to the Four Seasons, where we started last week. No capital letters are needed.
7. See section B below if you have forgotten basic MOO commands.
8. Watch the screen for "big signs" that I will project on your screen to instruct you. Follow the instructions, please!
9. Introduce yourself to the other class with your name and your interest in writing for electronic media.
10. As we did last week, we'll count off into five groups. Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall, and Four Seasons. Those of you who get Four Seasons stay put, while the others will type in the name of your season to go to another room, where your group will meet.
11. In your smaller groups, share ideas and strategies for your final project with members of the other class, and respond to their ideas constructively. As a group, share information about your strengths and weaknesses, your questions about your project, etc.
12. Jot down any ideas that occur to you about your final project, or about the dynamics of communicating in this environment.
13. We'll look at the transcripts of our interactions next week, to identify some trends, differences, strategies among forms of CMC.
14. We need to log off by about 6:45 to make time for presentations. Use @quit then close Pueblo.
