Theme: TRADITION AND TECHNOLOGY

Mt. Rushmore Photo

The 15th Computers and Writing Conference will be held only a few miles from Mt. Rushmore and the emerging Crazy Horse Memorial, the stone faces of American heroes etched deep into the granite of Paha Sapa, the Black Hills. As we are situated where huge stone faces personify the meeting of traditions, it is only appropriate that we consider the notion of traditions in the way they may be carried on, or complemented by computer and Internet-based writing technologies. The word "tradition" in this context should be construed broadly, to include not only traditional wisdom and culture, but also the traditions of writing and communication, and the ways traditions change and grow with and through technology.

Plan your vacation in and around the Black Hills!

Consider combining your trip to the Computers and Writing Conference with a vacation out west! Rapid City is convenient to the Badlands National Park, the Black Hills, Wind Cave National Park, Jewel Cave National Monument, and Devil's Tower National Monument, and within a few hours of the Bighorn Range, Yellowstone National Park, and Rocky Mountain National Park.

Come see the places where many of your favorite movies were filmed!

Remember that the weekend of May 29-30th is the long Memorial Day weekend, so plan to stay the extra day, and make your travel reservations early.

For information and a free packet on Rapid City and Black Hills tourism, please send e-mail to the Rapid City Convention and Visitors Bureau. Be sure to include your snail mail address.

How do I get to Rapid City?

For help with travel arrangements, the designated local travel agency is All Continents Travel Service. They can help with air and rental car reservations.

Our conference hotel is the Ramkota Inn (formerly the Howard Johnson Hotel and Conference Center), located at exit 59 on Interstate 90. They have guaranteed us a rate of $54 a night plus tax for one person, $64 for two people per night plus tax, with a supplemental charge of $10 for each additional person in the room 18 years of age or older. The deluxe suite rate is $105 per night, plus tax. However, you need to reserve by April 30. You can reach them at 1-605-343-8550. Please remember to tell them that you are with the Computers and Writing Conference.
