2001 Workshop:Celebrating the Body Electric

Throughout the day participants will learn a number of different computer applications and get ideas for projects, lessons, and techniques that will increase student involvement in the English classroom.  Workshop consultants will act as mentors for participants, helping them learn whatever application is being presented. Participants can expect a great deal of one-on-one assistance throughout the day.

8:30-9:00: Welcome and Introductions.  Please fill out information form, which we'll pass around.



9:00-9:50: Enhancing critical thinking skills through e-mail, journals, and other applications.  Participants will learn specific computer applications for the classroom.

10:00-10:50: Exploring online discussion spaces and creating greater student involvement through those discussions.  Participants will view online spaces where teachers can take scholars for online discussions geared toward curricular goals.

10:50-11:00: Break



11:00-11:50: Computer facilitated peer-response strategies.  Participants will learn how to use the "comment" feature in word processing.

There are many "quick and easy" methods and strategies to encourage scholar reflection.  We've looked at some peer response tools.  Tools like Insert >Comment and Insert>Hyperlink can be used to build meta-reflection into the process of writing.



11:50-1:00: Lunch, on your own.


1:00-1:50: Using the web in productive ways.  Participants will learn how to evaluate websites and how to use the web efficiently and effectively in the classroom.

2:00-2:50: Responding to Literature through the building of web sites. Participants will learn to create simple websites and get ideas on how to use web site building as a tool in the English classroom.

3:00-3:50: Using the Web to promote scholarship and as a forum for peer review.  Participants will learn how to set up webfolios that can be used as publishing spaces for scholar writing and thinking.
