The mixed blood cattle have a very
significant meaning in relation to Tayo. Tayo has been raised in a very
harsh enviroment and has been forced through the years to find new ways to
adapt to the lifestyle he was forced into. Just like the cattle Tayo is of
mixed blood and they are all seen as another way for the family to be
disgraced and laughed at in Auntie's opinion. Her feelings toward the
cattle are clearly expressed on the bottom of page 76 where she states
" That dirty Mexican did it so Ulibarri could get rid of those worthless
cattle. They gypped him. They made an old fool out of him." On the top of
page 77 she continues with "..it will give them something else to laugh
about." Auntie is very concerned about what others think and buying the
cattle is another "crisis" for her to dwell on.
Overall, I believe that Auntie thinks of
the cattle and Tayo being on the same level. They have both caused
disgrace and embaressment for the family. Auntie fell a sort of tough love
towards Tayo as Dr. Day stated in class today, but I think she really
loves the chaos he brings into her life because that is what she thrives
on.
