For the second posting, I would like to share my thoughts on Helen
Jean. When Helen Jean left Towac I think she had every intention of
succeeding in the outside world, but was not sure how everything would
work out, so she was actually relieved when Emma was out the day she left.
When she got out on her own, I got the idea that she was not
treated well by men. As time went on, she started to think that things
were supposed to be that way, that the men were supposed to beat up the
women. So when she meets these Laguna guys she has some mixed feelings
about them. Maybe she even feels slightly bad about taking their money
because they are not mean to her, they treat her like a human. I think
the fact that she felt bad drove her to getting a job at the theater, not
the fact that she didn't have money for rent. She could have stole money
for rent, but some morals that she had gave her reservations about it.
Also, I think that the reason she never sent money to Emma and her
sisters back home was because she wanted to wait until she had a lot of
money to send them so they would think that she really made it big. She
is embarrassed of what she is right now, and is too ashamed to make
contact with her family yet.
