Dear English 325 class,

Thanks so much for being there with me today to witness Robert Big Elk's
testimony in class. As I said, there is only so much we can learn
from reading books or by discussing in class or on the computer. For
balance in the ways we know, we need to hear from human beings, who
tell stories that not only help us understand realities, but also
make us FEEL. I thought that Robert really did help us with that
balance today, and I was very glad that you brought your sister in,
Michelle. Her remark near the end also helped make the class a
meaningful experience.

I did mean for you to ask quesions, but we didn't really get the time.
I do thank you for preparing them, and I think that your questions
could be good material for your last Silko posting, which is due by
next Friday, Dec 12, 5 PM.

In the last posting, I would like you to answer three questions,
as carefully and thoughtfully as you can.

1. How did you react to Robert Big Elk's presentation? How did it
make you feel? Could you see any connections to the Silko books
we have been reading, or the films? Did you have any questions for
him which he left unanswered?

2. After reading the assigned pages in _Storyteller_, what do you think
this book is about? Why did Silko write it, and why should we read it?
Would you recommend it to a friend? Why or why not (be honest)?

3. Finally, besides a Humanities credit, what did you get out of this
course? Did you learn something new, or discover something about
yourself and your own attitudes? Will it change the way you think
and behave in the future? Will it change what you read? After
participating in Internet discussion for the class, do you think
that this Silko discussion group is a good way for the class to
share ideas? Is there something else we could have done to make
the class more effective?

As you can see, you are going to need at least a page (2-3 e-mail
screens) to respond effectively to this assignment. Consider it
a sort of final exam and wrap up survey all in one, and do your
best to sum up your experience eloquently and with correct English.

I have made copies of the "American Indian vs Native American" editorial
by Tim Giago for all of you. You will get them on Tuesday. Please
be sure to have read all the assigned reading for Tuesday.

Thanks much!

Dr. Day
