Passage from story:
On page 99, Tayo is asked to send a message to the Mexican women. The
Mexican women, also a half-breed, has an affect on Tayo. At the bottom on
the page she says: "They are afraid, Tayo. They feel something happening,
they can see something happening around them, and it scared them. Indians
or Mexicans or whites-most people are afraid of change. They think that if
their children have the same color of skin, the same color of eyes, that
nothing is changing". "They are fools. They blame us, the ones who look
different. That way they don't have to think about what has happened
inside themselves"
I feel this passage sets the tone for the book. People who don't
have answers to why thinks are changing around have the tendency to blame
someone else. The book is very adamant about how Emo feels towards Tayo
about his background. The book also portrays Emo to be very ignorant
which is usually true in most cases. If people took the time to learn
about people of other races and their backgrounds, problems could be
solved. Unfortunately, ignorant people cannot put an effort towards
learning about other people. They simply continue life the "way it should
be".
