True I'm running a little late (thanks Dr. Day) but I wanted to
comment on the video. To be honest, I did not enjoy the video very much.
I thought that it was rehearsed too much and seemed kind of fake. The
girls listening to the story laughed too much about everything, I thought.
I was just wondering if they had rehearsed this a lot before the actual
filming.
Another thing that shocked me was that I expected Leslie Silko to
be older. I had pictured her as a woman at least 50. I think this is
because I think of the story tellers as grandmothers and older women. How
old is Leslie Silko?
The point that Leslie Silko made about gossip and storytelling is
what stuck with me most. She said that most (white?) people consider
these stories to be gossip or rumors. I think that she meant white people
because it is hard for whites to believe anything that can not be proved.
This is due to the technology of today. Science has made it possible to
prove or at least argue for the truth of something. These stories can not
be proved. I also do not think that many people are interested in these
stories which show a moral. Everyone is interested in romance, science
fiction, and fiction stories, not things that have a real value in life.
In my opinion, more people should take an interest in these because the
moral value of many people has become less important or non-existant.
I think that the tradition of the Native Americans was something
that every culture can learn from. The gap between the generations has
been sealed by their stories. There is much to learn from your elders.
Silko stressed the importance of these stories. I think that she was
right. I also believe that traditions such as this should be carried on
by other cultures also.
I thought a lot about the traditions of Silko's people. Where are
the traditions of the whites? Do we even have real tradition. I think
that most families have them, but what about our people as a whole? I
think this world would be a better place if we had a single tradition to
unite all of us.
I really enjoyed this class. I thought that Dr. Days knowledge
and love for this literature helped show us the importance of it. I also
enjoyed the class discussion. This class has broadened my mind to
literature that I had never read. Happy Holidays to everyone and thanks
for the great class.
