Since I missed Robert Big Elk's presentation I am unable to make a
post on that question. I do however have a lot to say about The
Storyteller.
I enjoyed the Storyteller very much. I think that Leslie Silko
was trying to stress to the world how important this tradition of
storytelling is. Also, within the book, there are many morals that
everyone should learn from. I think that she wrote this for everyone.
She left out no culture or person. This was written for everyone to learn
and realize the importance of your culture and also that of others.
My favorite story in the Storyteller is Story From Bear Country.
I enjoyed this story because of the descriptions of nature. The pictures
that entered my mind as I read this were beautiful and complete. Silko
combined all of the senses so that you could feel nature all around you
and within you. My favorite paragraph was
"Their beauty will overcome your memory
like winter sun
melting ice shadows from snow
And you will remain with them
locked forever inside yourself
your eyes will see you
dark shaggy and thick."
I enjoyed these lines because honestly the beauty of what has been
described has stayed with me since I read this book two weeks ago. I
believe that many people, including myself, take nature for granted.
People believe that nature was put here for us to use. Is that really
true. Nature is a beautiful gift and I don't think that enough people
realize this.
I have learned a lot of things from this class. One of this
continues from the paragraph above. I have learned that I should not take
nature for granted. I have noticed more about my surroundings than I had
before and I smile now when I see something that is beautiful. I have
also learned more about the trouble and pain the white people forced upon
those that are different. This book combined with Incidents of a Slave
Girl, which I read for American Literature has made me even more
knowledgable of the discrimination against other races and cultures. I
really enjoyed this class. I thought that Dr. Day did a fine job of
getting us to look beyond what you read and look into the story more. I
have shared with others my feelings for this class. I hope that it will
be taught again by Dr. Day and others can learn what I did. Thank you.
