Professional Interests


Dan began teaching at NIU in 1998 and is a former winner of the Giannasi Award for Excellence in Teaching Freshman English. Dan’s essays and fiction have appeared in Details, The Chicago Reader, the Paris Review, Santa Monica Review, Columbia and many other journals and magazines.

Dan's debut fiction collection, Married but Looking, has just been published from The Livingston Press. He is a winner of both a Pushcart Prize for fiction and a Paris Review Discovery Prize, and was awarded a grant from the Illinois Arts Council in 2005 for prose writing. His story, "In the Belly of the Cat," has been anthologized several times.

In addition to teaching, Dan currently serves as Book Reviews Editor for Fifth Wednesday Journal, and he oversees a flock of several dozen chickens on a small, family farm.
