In both my teaching and research I seek to expand narrow definitions of American identity by extending the framework through which we see "American-ness" take shape, that is, looking beyond national borders and familiar cultural norms of difference to highlight surprising similarities in the formation of American identities and American literatures. My research explores gender roles and marriage expectations spanning texts in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries from Scotland, Canada, New England and the Caribbean concentrating on indigenous, biracial, black and white colonial women in this period. My teaching follows through on this broad spectrum of scholarly interests. Selected Publications > Current Courses > |
