The Department of English offers a program of studies
concentrating on various aspects of professional writing. The area of
study is intended for students and practicing professional who wish to
develop their writing skills in order to seek or advance a career in
professional writing and who wish to explore the rhetorical, linguistic,
and technological context of professional writing. The area of
study is also intended for students who wish to pursue the masters
degree in professional writing as a stepping stone to further graduate
study.
Assistantships are often available. They offer free
tuition with a 20-hour per week position that involves
either teaching, writing, editing, research, or some
combination of these. Traditionally, these assistantships
have been on campus, but off-campus opportunities may be
available.

Students may elect Department of English
courses in literature and linguistics or, with the faculty advisor's
approval, courses from other departments such as communication, education,
journalism, art, business, technology, and instructional technology.
*THESIS
OR PROJECT: Students must complete either (1) a thesis that demonstrates
substantial knowledge of and original thought with respect to scholarship in
rhetoric, composition, or technical and professional writing or (2) a
substantial writing project that demonstrates exemplary professional writing
ability. The master's thesis committee shall consist of two members of the
graduate faculty in English, one of whom shall serve as the chair.
All
students in the area of study must demonstrate a competence in grammar and
usage by passing English 207 with a B or higher or by passing the
proficiency test for English 207.
