The Department of English, in conjunction with NIU's Cooperative Education/Internship Program, offers internships that enable you to apply your writing, editing, research, or teaching skills within a company or organization.  If you are an upper-level undergraduate or a graduate student, we can help you arrange an internship that is suited to your abilities, interests, and goals, as well as your academic schedule.

Full and Part-Time Internships
You can intern on a part-time or full-time basis during the fall, spring, or summer terms. Internships can begin at any time and may extend over more than one semester. Summer internships are especially appealing to students.

Length of Internships
Internships typically last for one semester or summer term; however, longer or shorter internships are also possible. The number of contact hours per week varies. You can arrange a part-time internship of 10-20 hours per week while attending courses. Or, you can arrange a full-time internship of 40 hours per week.

Credit for Internships
Internships may be taken for credit or for no credit. To qualify for credit, your internship must involve primarily writing, editing, research, training, or some combination of these. Once your credit internship is approved within the department, you will be enrolled in either English 496 or English 528 (for graduate students). Credit is variable depending on the number of hours worked and the nature of the work.

For credit internships, an English department Internship Coordinator will monitor your progress and provide you with help and feedback . Minimum requirements include an internship journal, a progress report, and a final report with samples of work produced during your internship. You will be graded on an S (satisfactory) or U (unsatisfactory) basis.

Paid Internships
Some internships are paid, and some are not. Whether you receive pay (and, if so, how much) is strictly a matter of negotiation between you and the internship company or organization. It is quite common for interns to receive both credit and pay.
