The primary mission of the Writers' Workshop, as distinguished from the University Writing Center, is to support students enrolled in English 102/103P during their first year at NIU. Tutors team with instructors to facilitate a carefully integrated curriculum each week in both fall and spring semesters. These required 50-minute sessions may center on any number of composition-related concerns, whether those be reading comprehension and analysis, content development and organization, or elements of style and mechanics. Sessions are collegial, honoring the perspectives of students, tutors, and instructors.
The Computer Labs in Reavis 203 and 206, which are conveniently located for English students, are maintained by Information Technology Services (ITS). Technical writing classes meet regularly in these facilities. Together with other computer laboratories on campus, these rooms are open at certain hours to English majors working on papers and other assignments. Schedules are updated every semester.
The ESL Center provides one-on-one tutoring and support for the ESL students of our community. We have one hour sessions. You can sign up for sessions in the ESL Center, or by calling and scheduling an appointment. We usually work with our clients in conversation, pronunciation, written and verbal communication, and American culture. We also provide support and practice for the GET and SPEAK tests. Our tutors are experienced ESL/EFL TAs, Instructors, and Professors from NIU.
Classes in the first-year composition program, which is nationally recognized for its advances in computer-mediated instruction, meet once a week in computer laboratories.
The goal of Networked Writing and Research (NWR) is to support the use of technology in composition courses for Northern Illinois University. We also maintain a dedicated computer lab for English graduate assistants in Reavis Hall. More than a tech support center, the NWR also hosts a series of workshops and lectures intended to showcase the wide variety of technological advances available for instructors.
