How to Handle Journals
- Require small looseleaf notebooks
- Suggest divisions: Academic/Personal
- Date each entry
- Write more than a few sentences
- Suggest regular writing, 3-4 times a week at least
- Write at different times of day and night
- Spotcheck and say nice things
- Make regular use in class
- Index at the end of term
- Count--but do not evaluate by grading
- Keep a journal yourself

- To start discussions
- To summarize lessons/ideas
- To refocus lost classes
- To solve problems
- To respond to readings/films/speakers
- To generate paper topics
- To let off steam
- To set priorities/schedules
- To evaluate personal academic progress
- To "free write" and "brainstorm"
- To be a record of growth
- To learn to like to write
