Problem Solving Essays

One way of arranging an essay was developed by Carl Rogers. The purpose of the Rogerian arrangement is to solve a problem by compromise, not to win an argument. To do this you must present the two sides of the issue impartially.

This essay has five parts: the introduction, your opponent's arguments, your arguments, areas of agreement, and the resolution.

Introduction
The introduction explains the problem. You must not try to influence your audience to agree with your views.

Your Opponent's Arguments
Your opponent's arguments gives an objective, unbiased view and does not attack or refute your opponent's views or ideas.

Your Arguments
Your arguments illustrates your position objectively.

Areas of Agreement
Areas of agreement restates areas where both sides agree.

Resolution
The resolution recommends a compromise that solves the problem to the satisfaction of both sides.

To use the Rogerian arrangement you must be able to present both sides objectively. You are not trying to win the argument or convert people to agree with your views; you are trying to get two sides, those who agree with you and those who agree with your opponent, to compromise.
