Job Description: Technical Specialist
Title of the Position. Technical Specialist,
University Writing Center
Primary Function of the Position. The Technical
Specialist of the University Writing Center collaborates with a team of
full-time staff and part-time peer tutors/GAs who engage in Writing Center
development, outreach, and service to NIU students, faculty, and staff.
The Technical Specialist:
-
maintains a server to support an online writing lab (OWL),
Writing Center websites, and Writing Center data-collection
-
helps develop and maintain the OWL
-
maintains a stable image on computers in the Writing Center
tutoring area
-
installs any software or shareware that supports an electronic
writing environment or Writing Center records keeping
-
assists Writing Center administrators, tutors, and students
in software use
-
provides support for technology in the Writing Center (including
the smart classroom)

advises Director on software and hardware purchases as well
as uses of various shareware
-
identifies technical equipment that needs replacing or upgrading
-
assists with workshops that focus on electronic writing technologies
-
tutors students
-
teaches one course per academic year
-
participates in writing center assessment projects
Minimum qualifications. M.A. required in Rhetoric/Composition
or relevant field (e.g., English with a concentration in Composition Studies;
Communication Studies). 2-4 years experience working with technology
maintenance and various software supportive of electronic writing environments.
2 years teaching college-level composition or writing courses in some other
discipline. Tutoring experience in a writing center or similar learning
environment preferred.
